I just finished reading a book by Matt Tommey called “Unlocking the Heart of the Artist” . After going through his Artist Rise Up Master Class on Facebook, I wanted to hear more from him. It is a powerful book that will help you unlock your own creativity and unique voice in God’s Kingdom.
Purpose of Matt Tommey
Matt Tommey in “Unlocking the Heart of the Artist” wants to help artists understand who God created them to be. He wants the reader to know how to step into the call of God on their lives. Also, he wants to help them understand their own, unique prophetic voice by helping the reader answer two critical questions:
“Who am I?” and “What have I been created for?”
You will begin to understand your own uniqueness in the Kingdom of God.
Summary of “Unlocking the Heart of the Artist”
Throughout “Unlocking the Heart of the Artist”, Matt Tommey takes us through a step by step process to learn how to get past the roadblocks that prevent us from stepping into all that God has for us and learn how to work with God in all areas of our lives- creative, business, spiritual, etc.
We all have past sins, habits, and false belief systems that get in the way of God truly working in our lives. Matt Tommey helps us get rid of the garbage and learn to understand God’s heart for us. Additionally, he helps us learn to co-labor with God in our lives and not just work for him.
He teaches us how to dream again letting God speak through us in whatever creative medium we use.
Many artists don’t understand how they can make money from their art and therefore, have a “starving artist” mentality. Getting other jobs that they don’t really want to do in order to support their creative endeavors. However, He shows us how to prosper as artists. By learning how to align ourselves with the plans God has for our lives, we can thrive.
He says:
“Friend, if you are struggling with finances as a creative person, one big reason may be that you’re chasing money from ideas, pursuits, and places God never intended for you. Instead of stopping the train of life for a moment and asking the Lord whether or not your plans are actually part of His design for your life, are you just continuing to do your own thing in hopes for God’s mercy and few crumbs from His table? Listen that is not God’s best for you! You were designed for more! God has a beautiful way for you to receive provision for everything you need in this life.”

Application to My Life
One of the biggest things I got out of the book was learning to hear the voice of God. He taught me to invite God into my daily work by asking the simple question, “What can we do together today?”
By starting off with praise and worship and just spending time with God I am able to feel God’s presence more deeply and hear him more clearly. By remembering that God actually wants to be with me and spend time with me, I am reminded that life is not just about performance and “doing” things, but “Being”.
I used to think that I had to sacrifice for God and had a tendency to focus on my performance. Instead, I am now learning to create with God. Learning to enjoy the journey and just be with Him is just as important as seeing Him working through me and my writing and other creative endeavors.
This book has inspired me to step out in faith and just start creating again. I am reminded that I do have a unique voice- my own personal story and God will not only help me get rid of my garbage but, he will use it to bless others through my own, unique creative voice when I align my will to His.

I highly recommend “Unlocking the Heart of the Artist” by Matt Tommey to anyone who wants to step into all that God has created them to be. For anyone who wants God to work through their creative voice, whether it is writing, painting, sculpture, or any other creative voice, this book is an invaluable resource.
Even if you don’t think you are naturally creative, this book will help you work through your past, your bad habits, sins, or any other roadblock you may have. It will help you answer those questions “Who am I?” and “What was I created for?” If you apply what He says in the book, it will help you go deeper in your walk with God.”
