You don’t have to be perfect for God to use you- Just say “Yes”. Subconsciously, I used to believe that I had to be perfect for God to use me. But, that’s not true. You just have to be willing to go where He will lead.
It says in Isaiah as the Lord was speaking to Isaiah,
” ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ Then I said, ‘Here am I. Send me.’ “
Isaiah 6:8
Isaiah was willing to do what God called him to do and that’s all we have to do- we just have to say “Yes, Lord.” He will direct us if we are willing to release control to Him and let Him lead.
Just Say “Yes”
The Breakdown
I spent three years in a repertory theater ministry performing one-act plays at schools, nursing homes, churches, etc. We traveled in small groups of 3 or 4 people in a van for approximately 4 to 5 months at a time. During my first tour, our van broke down on the way to a dinner theater performance at a church. One of our tires had gone flat. We couldn’t get it off, so our unit leader walked down to the next exit to get help.
About an hour later, here he comes in a huge work truck going the wrong way down the freeway. The man driving helped us get the spare tire on and we headed for the next automotive shop we could find. We told them our story and they gave us 2 new tires valued at $100 each for our van and we only paid about $40 which is all we had in our vehicle fund.
Meanwhile, we were leaving messages at the church we were supposed to perform at and weren’t sure if they were getting them or not. When we pulled into the church parking lot at just after 6 pm, the time we were scheduled to be there, the whole congregation was standing in the parking lot looking for us. They had received all the messages that we had left.
A Most Imperfect Performance
Because all of our nerves were on edge from the events of the day, let’s just say that we did not have one of our best performances. Character was lacking, I missed at least one full page of dialogue in one of the plays. One of my team members missed several lines. Needless to say, we were not looking forward to our curtain call or greeting the people afterward. However, when we went out to take our bows, we received three standing ovations. It was incredible and totally unexpected. Everyone was blessed by the performance and the plays. They were extremely happy.
Afterward, we sat down to eat a great meal and, I don’t know about the others, but, I counted my blessings.
In spite of our weaknesses and not being “perfect”, GOD USED US ANYWAY!
You Don’t Have to be Perfect
I share this story as an example of things gone wrong and how God can use you anyway. I encourage you to stop trying to be perfect. Stop thinking that you aren’t good enough, or pretty enough, smart enough, or skilled enough. God can use someone with a willing heart much more than someone who thinks they have it all together or is more skilled.

I recently listened to Matt Tommey for the Artist Rise Up Master Class on Facebook and really learned a lot about how to work with God in my creativity. Or, rather, how to invite Him into my day-to-day journey. Whether you are a writer, painter, sculptor, or just want to learn how God can use you, check out his book “Unlocking the Heart of the Artist”.
I had always struggled with trying to be “perfect” letting fear get in my way and often thought that God could never use me. I felt like I had to work “for” God (subconsciously). But, I don’t and you don’t either.
Now, I wake up and say “What can we create together today, Lord?”
Conclusion
God can use whatever you have to offer Him. Do you have something that’s always been on your heart to do but have just been afraid? Or, maybe, just thought that you weren’t good enough. Look deep within your heart, let God show you and direct you. He does have a plan for your life. You just have to be willing. Just remember, you don’t have to be perfect for God to use you- Just say “Yes”.
