20 Bible Verses on Identity and Purpose

20 Bible Verses on Identity and Purpose 2

There are many Bible verses on identity and purpose that can help you to understand who God created you to be. I want to share 20 Bible verses that have helped me.

For instance, have you ever asked yourself any of the following ?

  • Who did God created me to be?
  • What is God’s purpose for my life?
  • On what do I base my self-worth? On the word of God or on external things such as how well you perform, what you own, how you look, how much money you have, etc.?
  • What are the lies that you believe about who you really are deep down?

For many years I dealt with identity issues. I placed my faith in all the wrong places and  felt like I was always trying to measure up. For instance, I was constantly trying to earn the approval of others. Being a perfectionist made this especially hard.

Consequently, this led to misunderstandings, outbursts of anger, low self-worth, and depression.

Moreover, when our value and sense of who we are comes from anything other than the word of God, we will eventually be let down.

In Jesus we find not only our salvation but our true identity and purpose as well.

Furthermore, you are not an accident. In Jesus we are accepted and secure. You are significant and have a purpose. And, what is true if Christ is true of you.

In Discover Your True Identity: A 52 Guided Prayer Journal, I speak to each of these issues. I included 52 different Bible Verses on identity in purpose in Christ– one for each week of the year.

Here’s are some of those Bible verses.

20 Bible Verses On Identity and Purpose in Christ

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”

Psalm 139:13-16 NIV

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.”

Romans 8:28 NIV

“Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless before Him in love; He predestined us to adoption as sons to Himself through Jesus Christ according to the good pleasure of His will,”

Ephesians 1:4-5 MEV

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.”

1 Peter 2:9 NIV

“Of His own will He brought us forth with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of His creatures.”

James 1:18 MEV

“So we may boldly say: ‘The Lord is my helper, I will not fear. What can man do to me?’”

Hebrews 13:6 MEV

“Have not I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:9 MEV

“You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than He who is in the world.”

1 John 4:4 MEV

“Let your lives be without love of money, and be content with the things you have. For He has said: ‘I will never leave you, nor forsake you.’”

Hebrews 13:5 MEV

“If you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead you will be saved.”

Hebrews 13:5 MEV

“We are the salt of the earth . But if the salt loses its saltiness, how shall it be made salty? it is from then on good for nothing but to be thrown out and to be trampled underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a basket, but on a candlestick. And it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”

Matthew 5:13-16 MEV

“You did not choose Me, but I chose you, and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that the Father may give you whatever you ask Him in My name.”

John 15:16 MEV

“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Acts 1:8 MEV

“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, so that we should walk in them.”

Ephesians 2:10 MEV

“Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.’”

Matthew 22: 37-40 MEV

“And He raised us up and seated us together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”

Ephesians 2:6 MEV

“This is a faithful saying: If we die with Him, we shall also live with Him. If we endure, we shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us. If we are faithless, He remains faithful: He cannot deny Himself.”

2 Timothy 2:11-13 MEV

“You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than He who is in the world.”

1 John 4:4 MEV

“And you are complete in Him, who is the head of all authority and power. In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, buried with Him in baptism, in which also you were raised with Him through the faith of the power of God, who has raised Him from the dead.”

Colossians 2: 10-12 MEV

“For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”

Colossians 3:3-4 NIV
