Do You Have a Healthy Spirit?

Do You Have a Healthy Spirit?

Do you have a healthy spirit? What do I mean by that? This is part three of a series about being healthy body, mind, and spirit. If you missed part 1 and 2, you can read them here:

You Are a Temple of the Holy Spirit – Part 1
What is a Healthy Mind – Part 2

It’s important to be healthy in every part of our lives. To begin with, How would you define our spirit?

Healthy Spirit Defined

When I ask “What is a healthy spirit?”, I am referring to the eternal part of us that is eternal.
Each one of us has a physical body, a mind, and a spirit. The spirit is defined as “the nonphysical part of a person that is the seat of emotions and character; the soul.”

It says in 1 Corinthians:

“…flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Listen, I tell you a mystery: we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed- in a flash, in a twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality…”

1 Corinthians 15: 50-53

We need to feed our spirit the same way we need to feed our physical bodies and our minds.

When our physical bodies die, our spirit still remains. It’s the part of us that is eternal. It’s like a cup. If it’s full then you have reserves that you can draw on when life is difficult. If it is empty, then I find that is when worry, self-doubt, fear, fatigue and the like take over.

In order to feed our spirit, we need a relationship with God.

Three Keys to a Healthy Spirit

Learning to Listen

God wants to speak to us individually. What a thought! To think that Almighty God, the creator of the universe and everything in it, wants a personal relationship with me. What an incredibly humbling thought!

When praying, it’s so easy to start in on our long list of demands, needs, and requests and to never stop talking long enough for him to speak to us.

When you talk with your spouse or your friends, you both take turns talking and listening. It’s the same with God. Sometimes, we just need to stop talking and just wait on God. Just listen and let him do the talking.

I know it isn’t easy but it is necessary if we are to hear what he wants to tell us.

Put Your Focus on God and Take it off of Yourself

God is waiting for us. He is right there waiting for us to reach out to him. A healthy relationship with God is just as important, if not more important than anything else because he provides the strength and wisdom we need each day to make quality decisions.

If I continue to look to my own wisdom, I am more apt to make mistakes that can sometimes cost me dearly. If I take the time to listen to him, I can usually avoid some of the many pratfalls that await me.

God speaks to us through his Word, his Spirit, circumstances, and other people.

Use the Tools He’s Given You

The Bible

It’s a living book. It is his love story to us. It’s an instruction book full of vital and valuable information to help us in this life and the next.

Read the Bible every day. Memorize Scripture regularly so that you have it in your heart when you need it.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16

Jesus was God in the flesh, fully God and fully man. He lived a sinless life but died a sinners death on the cross. Taking the punishment for our sins upon himself. He rose again, conquering death, on the third day, restoring our relationship with God so that we can live eternally with him in Paradise.

“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9

The Holy Spirit

If you have ever prayed, asking God to forgive you of your sins and declaring that Jesus is Lord of your life, believing in your heart that God raised him from the dead, then you get to spend eternity with God.

At the same time you prayed that prayer, he also gave you the Holy Spirit to be with you in this life to lead you and guide you and comfort you. He lives inside you- He’s that “still small voice” we sometimes hear. Listen to him, let him minister to you.

Take time to pray today. Have a conversation with God.

The Church

God lives in his people and the church is the body of Jesus Christ. It is a community of believers. He provided it to us so that we could come together and get good teaching, worship him and support one another.

Attend a good Bible teaching church. Take time to worship God.

Conclusion

So, what is a healthy spirit? It is one that is fed, like our bodies. Remember to reach out to God, He is right there waiting for you and wants to speak to you.
