You see, for those who don’t know, I used to suffer from depression. My identity and self-image were tied to how well I performed and how many mistakes I made. Not a good thing. That’s why I wanted to share some ways I have learned to overcome that kind of negative thinking.

How to Renew Your Mind

So how to renew your mind from negative thoughts? By using the best resource we have- God’s Word. It is a living Word and as relevant and powerful today as it ever was.

Over the years, I’ve learned to submit those negative thoughts to God and lay them at His feet. Then finding out what the Bible says about my specific thoughts and countering those lies with God’s truth. No matter what thought patterns you are trying to change for the good, God’s Word has something in it for you.

For Example

I am a mistake – Psalm 139: 13-16

Rewire Your Brain

To actually rewire your brain and break those negative thought patterns takes a concerted effort of taking the Bible and applying specific Scriptures to your situation.

My Example

Right now, I’ve dealing with Histamine Intolerance which causes my eyelids to break out in a red crusty, puffy rash when I have food with too many histamines in it. I never even knew food had histamines. Recently, I found out that this happened because of exposure to mold.

I’ve asked myself and God “Why did this happen” and “Why me?” This is something that only affects about 1% of the population. There are many foods that I cannot eat without getting reaction now- gluten, dairy, fermented foods such as pickles, tomatoes, chocolate and much more.
The one good thing that is coming out of this is that I am losing weight. Sticking to the very restrictive diet long-term thought is very hard so I’ve had to work on rewire my brain.

I work in a bakery during the day part-time and am very tempted by all the delicious cookies, breads and sweets. One day on the way to work I asked God to help me resist temptation and immediately, the Scripture verse came to me “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God”(Matthew 4:4)

Write, Memorize, & Speak Scripture

You can’t tell me that God doesn’t have a sense of humor. There couldn’t have been a more appropriate verse. Since then, I’ve also added Romans 12:1 and Hebrews 12:1-3.

All three of these verses help me when I want to give in to temptation. I say them out loud when I can and to myself throughout the day. I’ve also written them down in a notebook.

Whatever habit or negative thoughts you’re trying to break free of, whether it is food, alcohol, financial, fear, your identity or something else- find a few verses, write them down, memorize them and get them in your heart and mind so that you can draw on them when you need them most.

Rejoice in Who God is Always

It isn’t always easy when you’re overwhelmed with negative thoughts, but one other thing thing that helps you renew your mind is rejoicing in God. Just start worshiping Him.

In the moments when I most depressed, I turned on some of my favorite praise and worship play lists and just listened, at first. Then, it was hard, but as I started singing out loud and worshiping God, even though I really didn’t want to in that moment, the darkness would start to recede and God’s peace would begin to take its place.

The more I worshiped, the peace I felt. And, then His joy began to rise up as well.

Worshiping God is one of the best weapons we have against depression, spiritual warfare, fear and more.

Conclusion

So, when you ask yourself “how to renew your mind against negative thoughts” find out what the Word of God says about your specific situation and counter the lies with His Truth.

Find several verses that speak to your situation and write them down, memorize them, and say them to yourself and out loud. Rejoice in God even when you don’t feel like and let the peace and joy that comes from God bubble up from within you.

Be blessed.
