Why I Wrote One Year of Daily Creative Writing Prompts

I love to write. But, sometimes the hardest part of writing, especially creative writing for me, is getting started. It’s coming up with the initial idea. Once I have the beginning of an idea, it gets easier. I get into a “flow” of sorts. That’s why I came up with the idea for a full year of different types of creative writing prompts. To help other people jump-start their own ideas, so to speak. It’s a fun way to explore different ideas, write in different genres and get the creative juices flowing.

Types of Creative Writing Prompts

Every day for a year you have 3 different styles of creative writing prompts.

• A quick one-word prompt to get your creative juices flowing
  • This can be anything from a color, fruit or vegetable or an object. It could be a place or a concept of some kind, or something you do.
• A Self Discovery Prompt
  • Oftentimes, I find that some of the best ideas for stories, plot lines or characters come from things and people we already know and are familiar with.
  • These self discovery prompts are a great way to get to know yourself better including:
    • Things you’ve been through
    • Things you’ve done
    • Your thoughts and beliefs about yourself, others, God or the world
    • Your favorites- colors, foods, sports, tv shows
    • What gives you hope?
    • What do you enjoy doing?
  • A great way to discover who God created you to be is to understand what’s on your heart. This is a fun way to begin to explore that.
• A random phrase in a specific genre
  • A specific situation or scenario placed in any one of ten different genres including:
    • Action Adventure
    • Children’s Fiction
    • Christian Fiction
    • Comedy
    • Fantasy
    • Mystery
    • Romance
    • Science Fiction
    • Thriller
    • Western

Organization

You can use this book in several different ways. The beginning of the book is organized by day. Three different styles of prompts for each day. However, at the end of the book, there are three different sections where the writing prompts are organized by each section as stated above. Quick one-word writing prompts, Self Discovery prompts, and Prompts by genre- which are then subdivided by each genre in the book.

So, this way, for example, you can jump to any kind of prompt you want when you want. If you want to write in a specific genre such as mystery then you can do that. If you want to go through all of the self-discovery writing prompts first, then you can do that as well.

Therefore, you can utilize this resource however best suits your needs.
