Prayer and Spiritual Warfare – Prepare for War

Prayer and spiritual warfare- prepare for war

When it comes to prayer and spiritual warfare, we all need to be ready. That’s why I want to share a devotional called “Prepare for War” by Worthy Brief that really caught my attention. This message was inspired by it.

While war continues in the Ukraine, violence continues to increase in our cities and although tolerance is preached, we live in a cancel culture where if someone doesn’t agree with you, they don’t want to hear.

Prayer and Spiritual Warfare

However, the war I am talking about is a spiritual war that has been going on since Adam and Eve gave into temptation from Satan in the garden of Eden. We need to prepare for war against our true enemy Satan. Prayer and Spiritual Warfare go hand in hand. The only way to fight the enemy is with prayer.

Take a look at Ephesians below:

Finally, my brothers, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For our fight is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, and against spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”

Ephesians 6: 10-13 MEV

In these verses, we are reminded of who our true enemy is and how to fight him- put on the whole armor of God so that you can stand against him. But, what exactly is the armor of God?

7 Weapons of Spiritual Warfare

The next few verses break it down for us.

“Stand therefore, having your waist girded with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, having your feet fitted with the readiness of the gospel of peace, and above all, taking the shield of faith, with which you will be able to extinguish all the fiery arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray in the Spirit always with all kinds of prayer and supplication. To that end be alert with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.”

Ephesians 6:14-18 MEV

God gives us 7 weapons in these verses to help us stand against the spiritual forces of evil.

Truth

First, surround yourself with His truth- the truth of the gospel message and truth contained in His Word. Unlike the society in which we live, where we told that truth is relative or subjective, God’s Word is THE TRUTH and it is not subjective. It is the standard by which we will all be judged one day.

Breastplate of Righteousness

Secondly, The righteousness of God is your protection, not your own righteousness, but His because of all He has already done for you. There is no way that we can earn righteousness that comes through salvation in Christ Jesus. It is a gift.

Gospel of Peace

Walk daily in the gospel. Carry it in your heart everywhere you go. It is life and it is a living word applicable to each and every situation that we may ever face.

Shield of Faith

It can extinguish all the fiery darts of the evil one Your faith in the power of God, and the truth of His Word is a powerful weapon that will protect you against all the lies of the enemy.

Helmet of Salvation

Protect your heart and mind knowing that if you accepted Jesus into your heart as Lord and Savior that you are secure in your salvation.

Sword of the Spirit= the Word of God

The Christian singer Carman, who passed away this past year, had a song called “Great God” which illustrates how the word of God is like a sword. If you’re not familiar with his music, check out his video here on YouTube for free:

“for the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” God’s Word is alive and is available to us for protection against the enemy’s attacks as well as as an offensive weapon.

Hebrews 4:12 MEV

Prayer

Prayer is one of the best weapons we have. God is waiting for us to reach out to Him in faith, knowing that He hears and responds to our prayers. He is always listening and He knows your heart and is looking to see your faith and wants you to trust Him with your every joy or pain.

Conclusion

As we get closer to God, we need to memorize and study scriptures so we we have them when we need them. This is necessary as we prepare for warfare in all areas of our life.

The enemy will attack us in areas he knows we are weak. He will lie, steal, kill, and destroy unless we prepare for his attacks.

The first step is being aware. God has given us all we need through Jesus and His Word and they are powerful weapons as well instruments of truth. They guide us and lead us each and every day. Additionally, Prayer and Spiritual Warfare are an essential part of our Christian lives. Most importantly, you cannot fight the enemy without prayer.
