In this article, we’ll take a look at a brief history of Thanksgiving as well as explore why we give thanks and reflect on timeless wisdom of Some Bible Verses for Thanksgiving this holiday season.

The Bible encourages us to be thankful in every circumstance, and there are countless verses that remind us of the importance of giving thanks to God.

A Brief History of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a holiday rooted in both American history and Christian tradition. While the modern-day celebration is often centered around family meals and traditions, the first Thanksgiving dates back to 1621 when the Pilgrims shared a harvest feast with the Wampanoag Native Americans in Plymouth Colony.

This event marked a time of cooperation, thanksgiving for a successful harvest, and reflection on the providence of God.

In the centuries that followed, Thanksgiving evolved into a national holiday, with President Abraham Lincoln declaring it a day of “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.” Lincoln’s proclamation in 1863 helped establish the tradition of a national holiday of gratitude, which has continued to be celebrated every year since.

Thanksgiving is not only a time to enjoy delicious food but a chance to pause and consider the spiritual importance of being thankful — a principle that runs deep in Scripture.

Why Do We Give Thanks?

As Christians, thankfulness is a central theme in our relationship with God. The Bible encourages us to give thanks in all circumstances, whether in times of joy or difficulty, because God is always good even if we can’t see it or understand.

Thankfulness not only honors God, but it also helps us cultivate a heart of contentment, peace, and joy. Gratitude keeps us focused on God’s blessings, even when life feels overwhelming.

How to Cultivate a Thankful Heart

While it’s easy to focus on the material blessings of life, true thanksgiving stems from a heart of gratitude to God for His presence, provision, and unchanging love. Here are a few practical ways you can cultivate thankfulness during Thanksgiving and beyond:

  • Make it a daily practice: Start or end each day by thanking God for specific blessings — big and small.
  • Serve others: Acts of service help shift our focus away from ourselves and encourage a heart of gratitude.
  • Keep a gratitude journal: Write down what you’re thankful for each day. It’s a simple but powerful way to reflect on God’s goodness.
  • Praise through music: Sing songs of worship and thanksgiving. Music is a wonderful expression of gratitude.
