“The Sound of Freedom” movie starring Jim Caviezel opens this week. Because of that I started asking myself “what does it mean to be free?”. I believe the timing for this movie is very appropriate with it being released on July 4th when we celebrate our freedom as a nation. But, more on that later.
So, What Does It Mean To Be Free?
Freedom Defined
As we celebrate freedom as a nation, what does it really mean to be free? An an American citizen I am free to pursue my dreams, work where I want, live where I want and be as successful as my efforts allow me to be. Not everyone is so lucky.
Freedom has several different definitions according to definitions from Oxford Languages:
- “the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.”
- “absence of subjection to foreign domination or despotic government.”
- “the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved.”
As a Christian, I am free in Christ from all my sins and will get to spend eternity in heaven with my Lord.
Freedom Does Not Mean No Rules or Laws
Freedom does mean that we can do whatever we want. There are rules and laws which are place to protect us and others. If there were no laws, there would be chaos. Although, we have the right to pursue our dreams and for the most part do as we please with our lives, we don’t have the right to hurt others.
For instance, God gave us the ten commandments so that we could know right from wrong and so that we could live a happy and fulfilling life.

The Ten Commandments, the Constitution and our laws protect us and give us a standard for right and wrong that is basic for all human beings. We all want to free to happy and fulfilling life but that does not mean there no boundaries.
Our freedom in Christ is a precious gift. Additionally, our freedom here in the United States is a gift. Both of which come with a cost.
There is a Price For Freedom
Freedom isn’t free. There was a price that was paid by Jesus on the Cross for our eternal freedom. And, there is a price for the freedom we have here in America that was paid by many men and women who have fought for our freedom over the years.
From the Revolutionary war to the civil war and all the way to many of our modern day wars, a price has been paid so that we could be free. Many people paid for the freedoms we have today with their very lives.
Jesus died on the cross for our eternal freedom from sin Freedom in Christ is a blessed gift that we just have to receive. There is nothing we can do to earn it. In the same way, we are only free here in America because someone paid the price to earn and protect those freedoms.
Some people, though, are still fighting for their freedom. Not everyone is as lucky or blessed as we are here in the United States. Many people live in countries under horrible dictatorships or are enslaved. That’s what the movie “The Sound of Freedom” brings to light. Millions of women and children are forced into sex slavery and forced labor every year.

The Sound of Freedom
The Sound of Freedom is a film that focuses on the problem of child trafficking. Based on the true story of a former government agent, Tim Ballard, who turns vigilante in order to rescue children from sex traffickers in Columbia, it stars Jim Caviezel as Tim Ballard, Mira Sorvino, and Bill Camp. It is also produced by Eduardo Verastegui.
These children are not free. Moreover, there are millions of them forced to perform unspeakable sexual acts every day and this is happening right here in America. The United States is the biggest consumer of child trafficking in the world and Mexico is the biggest producer.
These children have no hope for a future unless someone helps them. That’s what Tim Ballard did. He put his faith in action to help rescue these children.
We all have a chance to make a small difference here. As human beings and, especially, as Christians there are times when we need to stop talking about faith and put action behind it or it really isn’t faith at all. I believe that this is one of those times.
The sound of Freedom Release Date
The Sound of Freedom release date is July 4th. We can make a difference by simply going to see the movie at a theater near us. Right now, the producers of the film have a goal of getting 2 million people to go see the movie opening week in honor of the 2 million children that are currently enslaved.
The other way, is to start calling theaters near you to tell them you want them to show the movie, get help from your churches, friends, family and let everyone know. You can watch the official trailer as well as get tickets by heading to www.Angel.com/freedom.
I do not get any compensation if you click the link or make a purchase. I just believe in what they are trying to do to bring awareness to the problem. The powers that be- politicians, Hollywood, etc. Doesn’t want us to know how big of a problem child trafficking has become.
This is about more than just going to be entertained, it is about bringing awareness to a huge problem.
My husband and I rarely go the movies anymore, but we are going to support this movie on July 5th and I encourage you to get your tickets as well. It’s a simple way to make a difference in the lives of those children.
When we all come to together to take a stand, we can shine a light on this problem and perhaps save a life. We can put our faith in action by supporting this movie.
What Does It Mean To be Free For You?
I encourage you to think about how blessed you are today to be free. How do you experience freedom in your daily life? What does it mean to be free for you? What do you think freedom would look like for these children?
I know that this is a difficult subject and we don’t like to think about it. But, sometimes we have to take a stand and do what is right. Let the Lord speak to your heart and guide you as you put your faith in action as well.
Have a blessed week.
