I want to answer the question “why is it important to vote?” this week and give you 5 Biblical reasons Christians should vote. This election is very important in terms of the direction our country is going. We all see it. And, as Christians, we have a responsibility to uphold God’s truth and Be His light in this world.
However, It is sometimes hard to decipher truth from lies in this day and age. Right is wrong and wrong is right. It all seems upside down. The Bible this would happen in the last days. Take a look at a couple of verses.
Take a look at 2 Timothy 3: 1-7 and what it says about the last days.
Also, take a look at Isaiah 5:20-21:
“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and shrewd in their own sight!”

Why is it Important to Vote?
So, why is it important to vote? In my opinion, it’s our responsibility as citizens to make our voice heard. Not many countries have the opportunity that we have had to choose our representatives. If we don’t vote, we don’t have a say in who are leaders are or the policies and laws that are implemented.
Secondly, if we don’t continue to take advantage of our electoral process by exercising our right to vote, it is possible that one day we may not have it.
The third reason why Christians should vote is because we are called to be a light and let the love of God shine through us in our lives. This is a big way we can do so, by voting based on Biblical values. (see more below on being a light).
5 Biblical Reasons Christians Should Vote
Additionally, here are 5 more Biblical reasons Christians should vote even if the candidates we have to choose from aren’t perfect.
Justice
The first and, I believe, most important reason why Christians should vote is for Justice.
Proverbs 31:8-9 urges us to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves and ensures justice for the oppressed. Voting is a means to advocate for justice in society. This includes the unborn as well.
Life is a gift from God. The most precious gift we have. All life began with God. I believe we have to vote based on the candidate who will most honor the sanctity of life including the unborn, the elderly, etc.
Voting for someone who does not honor life, or choosing not to vote at all, is supporting those who would seek to destroy our most vulnerable ones.
“Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”“

Stewardship
In Matthew 25:14-30, the Parable of the Talents teaches us about being good stewards of what we’ve been given. Voting is a way to steward our influence and make choices that align with our values.
For me, if we don’t vote, we don’t really have a right to say anything one way or the other about the state of our nation. If we want to keep the freedoms we have enjoy in this nation- the freedom to worship God, the right to bear arms, the freedom of speech , etc., then we need to protect it by participating.
If we don’t vote, these rights will be taken away as in the story of the talents . And, many of our rights are already being trampled on.
Community Responsibility
The third reason why Christians should vote starts with Galatians 6:2 which calls us to bear one another’s burdens. Engaging in the electoral process helps support the common good and addresses community needs.
By not isolating ourselves and supporting our community voting for various candidates, amendments and the like we are making a difference.
“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”

Influence
Matthew 5:13-16 describes believers as the salt and light of the world.
So, according to this scripture “why is it important to vote?”
You see, participating in elections is a way to influence society positively and to have our values reflected in public policy and society. However, if we don’t “light our lamps” and participate, what kind of positive influence are we having?
God also called us to be a light and keep our lights lit (parable of 10 virgins). How can we do that? How can we make a difference, if we don’t participate? This is one of the biggest reasons I believe Christians should vote because “being a light” is a big part of God’s purpose for our lives.
Prayerful Decision-Making
The fifth and last reason I will share with you today about “why is it important to vote?” is because of Prayerful Decision-Making.
James 1:5 encourages us to ask God for wisdom.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men liberally and without criticism, and it will be given to him.”
James 1:5
Voting is an opportunity to seek His guidance in choosing leaders and policies that align with His will. He calls us to prayer for our leaders and our nations. By doing so, with Him, you are inviting Him into the decision-making process in this nation as well as in your own lives.
Also, God wants us to seek him in all things. He wants a relationship with you (check out my post about abiding with God called How Hurricane Milton Reminded Me to Abide With God). God is interested in you, your community, your state, your nation and this world.
After all, he created it. Christians should vote in conjunction with seeking God in prayer.
He also promised to guide you and one of the ways He does that is through prayer.
Conclusion
So, can you answer for yourself now “why is it important to vote?” or why Christians should vote? I can and did.
We are not called to live isolated lives, we are just as much a part of this society as anyone else and we have a responsibility to stand up for justice, to shine our lights, and be a part of our communities so that we can share the love of God.
This country was founded on Biblical principles and is the only country in the world that honors God on it’s currency. God has richly blessed us in this nation and it would be a sad day, if His blessing was removed because we didn’t do our part.
God wants us to abide with Him daily and be in relationship with Him. So, by doing just that He can guide us and give us wisdom and discernment in this election and anything else.
So do your own research, trust God, and vote.
Nothing is impossible for God.
