Have you ever asked yourself or someone else “how can you hear God talking to you”? I know I have. But, first, I have to ask, Are you listening?
I mean, how many of us actually spend time regularly trying to listen for His voice? To hear what God has to say to us?
Are You Listening?
How many of us just continue pray about our needs and wants without really listening for His answer, if we remember to pray at all? How can we hear God talking to us, if we are doing all the talking?
Do you expect Him to speak to you like He did to Moses in the burning bush?
Although God can speak to us in a variety of ways, most of the time it won’t be a burning bush experience.
God wants to hear from you and He wants to hear your prayers. However, He wants you to hear Him as well and the only way you can do that, is by taking time to listen.
So, are you listening?
How Can You Hear God Talking?
God can speak to us all kinds of different ways:
- through His Word
- in worship
- a donkey
- a burning bush
- a friend
- a stranger
- your spouse or a relative
- circumstances
- books and movies
- a quiet nudge
The list goes on and on. God can use anything He wants to reach us and to speak to us. But, mostly, He speaks to us through the Holy Spirit living inside of us. He speaks to us through a gentle whisper.
However, we have to be able to still our racing thoughts, stop planning for a few minutes, just actively listen and wait on His voice.
How I’ve Started Praying & Listening
This is something I am trying to do more often as well. This is how I’ve started when I want to spend a significant time with God- usually about 60 minutes.
Right now, I try to do this about once per week to help me reconnect with God on a deeper level and get focused for the week.
- Worship and surrender,
- Open scripture to a verse that is relevant to what is on my heart
- Talk to God about what’s on my heart
- Then I spend time just actively waiting for Him usually with a pen in hand and a journal
- If there are next steps, I make sure I have clarity
- Then I thank God and I pray.
The following poem came out of my most recent time with God. I was asking myself these same questions:
“How can you hear God talking?” and “Are you listening?”
“How can I still my own racing thoughts and just focus on Him?”
Whispers In The Wind
Whispers in the wind
Softly spoken words
Of comfort and peace
Saying I am with you
I'll never leave you
Nor forsake you
Press in and listen
To that still small voice
Whispers of wisdom
Direction and next steps
Of who You are and
Who I am in You
Healing, blessings
New beginnings
Eternal joy and purpose
Peace unending
Be My voice as you
Press in and listen
Let Me speak through you
Let Me work in you
As you worship Me
Delve into My Word
And seek My face.
Take Time to Listen
So, how can you hear God talking to you? Are you listening? I mean really trying to listen?
Taking time to worship and pray and listen to God, even just a few minutes a day, can change your life and lives of people around you.
God knows who you are and what you need. He knows the plans He has for you. Just take time to listen and then take one step at a time.
